Etudes of Horror: Kill the Duke
Music video (concept, charcoal drawn animation and rotoscoping, digital editing)
At 8 frames per second, each image contains a minimum of 4 drawings, with some rotoscoped sequences up to 16 frames. For the rotoscope process I improvised a hinged glass accessory that could protect an iPad screen while drawing, allowing me to see the stills for each frame through the paper (and to use it like a lightbox).
Each series of drawings was scanned, processed in Photoshop, then imported into After Effects where I added expressions to loop, combined rotoscope sequences with their lead in/out, and timed everything to fit the track. While the drawings are all 8fps, I used 24fps in the project file to allow the background noise flicker along with the music.
